Welcome to Dagon

HISTORY & BOUNDARIES

Dagon Township is located immediately north of downtown Yangon. The township comprises five wards and shares borders with Bahan Township in the north, Ahlone Township in the west, Mingalar Taung Nyunt Township in the east, and Lanmadaw Township, Latha Township and Pabedan Township in the south. Dagon was a small fishing village founded by the Mon in the 6th century, CE, around the Shwedagon Pagoda. Throughout much of the history, the village was just in the periphery of Thanlyin (Syriam), the commercial city located across the Yangon river. Still, because of the pagoda, Dagon's cultural significance was far greater than its size. In 1755, King Alaungpaya captured the village, renamed it Yangon (most commonly translated as "End of Strife"), and founded a larger city by adding settlements such as Ahlone, Pabedan, Kyauktada, and Botataung.

Over 1,500 businesses, total around 24,600 employees working in these respective businesses, its united with total 5 Wards, Area: 4.7 sq km – Density: 5,370/sq km, Total Population 25,082 people living in this township. 60% of the businesses mostly situated in Yaw Min Gyi Ward and Pyay (Western) Ward. Dagon has four primary schools, three middle schools and three high schools. The township's Dagon (BEHS-1) and Dagon (BEHS-2) are considered among the top public high schools in the country. Postal code 11191

Dagon is home to some of the most prominent places of the city, including the great Shwedagon Pagoda, the Maha Wizaya Pagoda, the National Museum, the National Theatre and the Yangon Region Hluttaw (Parliament). In the 1950s, the Burmese government cleared the squatters in the southern part of the township and built the Minmanaing Housing Project for senior civil servants. Dagon gained another prominent pagoda in the 1980s when Gen. Ne Win commissioned the Maha Wiziya Pagoda. During the British colonial period, Dagon was mostly a prosperous neighbourhood, though the areas closer to downtown was full of squatters. Dagon boasted both the Methodist English High School, one of the top English-language medium schools and the nationalist Burmese language medium high school, Myoma High School.

This prosperous neighbourhood boasts many hotels, embassies and diplomatic residences. On 6 February 2011, the Taw Win Centre, a major shopping and residential complex, was opened in the township. From here it is just a hop, skip and jump to the Sule-Shangri La Hotel, Sakura Tower and the Bogyoke Aung San Market in the downtown, and there are a number of offices in the immediate area such as Prime Hill Business Square and La Pyae Wun Plaza that are occupied by multi-national companies. With the Park Royal at its centre, this area is probably second only to Golden Valley in terms of its popularity with young and old childless expatriates. This is a very large township that stretches from the Park Royal Hotel and up to Myanmar’s most prized Shwe Dagon Pagoda, People’s Park / People’s Square backing on to Ahlone Township. The most popular area within Dagon is the Yaw Min Gyi Ward including the roads of Nawaday and Bo Yar Nyunt, which is a great place for apartment living, due to the lively streets and many restaurants.
